Does a MPPT charge controller need to be ventilated? I have a closed weathertight box that stays outside containing a battery and a pwm controller that I want to upgrade to MPPT. The pwm seems to work ok in the box but I want to upgrade it.

thanks,
Dimitri

Depends on the loads and the design of the SCC…

If the pwm handles it, the mppt should as well. If you increase the loads on the bank, the mppt may start putting out more heat, and cause issues.

Got pics?

It might be a simple math problem.

Assuming you can find the published efficiency of your current PWM and proposed MPPT controller you could compare their efficiency.

Lower efficiency means more watts lost thus more heat in your box.

For example my Victron MPPT 450/100 publishes 96%.

In my case: 96% x 5,350 watt array = 214 watts being generated at peak output.

What do u mean by watt array? How do you get that number? Thanks.
