My daughter is shopping for an ev she is looking at a bolt

We purchased a new (22) Leaf SL Plus (62 kWh) 2 years ago for our daughter to commute 30 miles to College and for us to use around town. 30k Miles later and it's been great. 3 months ago I tracked down a 2019 SL Plus (same larger pack and heat pump) with 19k miles for just over $19k for my High Schhol age son. No issues with that one either. They're pretty much identical other than the older one is missing a USB port and tilt steering wheel.

That said I wouldn't buy a Leaf other than a 2019 or newer plus for the additional range, additional power (214 HP), and the heat pump. I also wouldn't ever buy one without unfettered access to a 240V home charger as the CHADEMO port is just about phased out. I also wouldn't want to buy one if you have any consistent trips over 90 miles one way.

For a local and regional daily driver, the 2nd gen Leaf+ is a bargain right now. Low mileage cars well under $20k plus you get the $4k tax credit. Literally anyone can drive one. Lots of safety tech. very peppy, comfy for 4 adults, heat pump. Slow charging for the most part although I regularly see 74kw charging speeds. Chademo is a bitch but noone ever at the chargers and many Nissan dealers still allow free charging.

100% of the Bolts were recalled in 2022 and full battery replacement provided due to LG cell issues with folded tabs in the battery packs, also the same cells are used in the Solar Storage batteries and they were recalled as well, a very bad couple of years for LG.

That's what we thought they said. But it was "correct" not replace. Install monitoring software, only replace some if they fail the self-diagnostics.

Oh, remember how they were recalled in the past? It's Ba-ack!

(OK, it's different this time.)

Iirc the early gens of the Leaf had issues with battery conditioning / lack of good thermal management.
I was considering a leaf for a while. I forget why I ruled it out and have the Bolt at the top of the list. I wish the e-Golf had better specs.
I saw a Bolt EUV rural mail carrier a few months ago, didn't realize it was an EV until I got close to it.

@spawnofvstech ,did you verify the chargers at your work are compatible with the Bolt? (probably a dumb question...)
Welcome to the forum.
I just checked the chargepoint app and I have verified that the chargers at my work are Bolt compatible!

I got a 2018 Bolt EV Premier. The range was much better on this one. At the dealership it was showing max 219. I am very happy with my purchase so far. I didn't realize ALL seats are heated, even the back seats. Cheaper to heat the body that way instead of using the climate controls. My next step will be seeing if I can get the used EV tax credit. I am the 3rd owner but the last sale was in Oct 2021 so I may still be able to take advantage of the credit. I would just have to tell my employer not to withhold for federal taxes for me this year.

Best of luck!!!

Always exciting when you pick up a new ride.

How much the stealer get you out the door for it?

We've had the Kona EV for over a year, and it's been perfect. Just a commuter car, never planning any trips with it. Only charge at home. The 120v plug is painfully slow. I installed a 240v from my off grid system. The I can adjust the charge controller down to 10 amps so it doesn't tax my small system. Can't say enough good things about the quality control. It's a solid little car.

First, I have to say that I just cannot stand Toyota and will not buy anything from them.

That being said, one of my local buddies has a Prius hybrid and those might be much more viable for your daughter's use case. It "can be" charged like an EV for some number of miles, but since it has an engine, it can also run on gas only mode indefinitely ( as long as their is fuel)

If your daughter is in a mode of driving around children, then the Chrysler plug in hybrid minivan is another interesting option.

My son has a 2013 bmw 328 and it was not that expensive when we purchased it used, and it actually gets quite good fuel efficiency. It has a mild hybrid capability that is very subtle, but it goes a long way on a tank of fuel. We purchased it because they are quite collision resistant compared to many other small cars.

I test drove a Prius and it made me angry. The handling was not bad, but the road noise was insane. I do not have kids/plan to/or expect to have any in my car ever. I was initially looking at hybrids but then I tried full EV.

You know this is more common with the younger crowd now, many don't want kids - none of my daughters want kids - the 3 of them say because the world is too nutz and not getting better. Uncertainty over what is to come is a huge PAUSE button.

Let me guess - you're young.
If you change your mind, best results up to about age 32.
So don't wait too long if you are going to change your mind.

I’d say the same thing if the government uses the “emergencies act” to stop people from driving to Ottawa and voicing their mind in peaceful manor.

Really, dipping into the Political Twaddle - Politics, religion, gender, race, and now "environmental health & change" are all Forum Toxins and trigger points. Seen forums go POOFDAH after that crud started flooding them, took no time at all actually. Keep such nonsense on ick X or other babbler sites where it belongs.
