Whats more energy efficient: Off-grid or Grid-tie ?

If you have 1:1 net metering you have a virtual battery at 100% efficiency, infinite size, and zero cost. What was the question again? Now you know why the power companies don’t like it.

So buy the panels now, and if you don’t move in three months, they will be more valuable and you can sell them for a profit.

Natron Energy opens new sodium-ion battery facility in West Michigan

Still, it’s all about the pricing. Dollars per installed kilowatt hour, dollars per kilowatt hour, stored and released, those are the things that we care about.

    New Tariffs in the States

Our Kona has a more agressive Nanny, but it’s saved my bacon in FL a couple of times as parking lot race cars cut across my stern as I’m backing out of a spot. But that’s FL, I used to think MA drivers were the worst, then I moved to FL. 🙈

    New Tariffs in the States

No-one can because it’s not that easy balancing all the factors (range, power, size, mass, cost), and the US consumer has proven over and over again that ’size matters’, and it’s the Suburban Assault Vehicles that sell, while the $25K EVs are either never produced (looking at you, Tesla) or sit...

    New Tariffs in the States

Or having tax rebates for the above. 🤷‍♂️ None of this stuff has a single solution, and everything’s chaotic enough that the unintended consequences push the results even further from what the originators (said they) wanted. We’re going to have tariffs and rebates and incentives and job...

    New Tariffs in the States

Wall Street Journal: /* Beyond raising tariffs on electric vehicles, the White House announced on Tuesday that Biden is increasing a key tariff rate on steel and aluminum products to 25% from 7.5%, while the tariff on solar cells will rise to 50% from 25% and a new duty on shipping cranes will...

Solar power for central AC system

We still need specs on your panels, inverter, and central air system, but this probably isn’t going to work. Look at mini-splits instead, ours run betwee 200-500 watts average and do not have the startup surge that older, non-inverter central systems do. Can you swap out your central system...

    Solar panels cause bad weather.

We call the windows “Rain Preventers”. If you close them it will never rain. Leave them open on a clear day and it’ll pour.

    Has to be arithmetics...

Our PoCo wanted to give us avoided fuel cost before my AHJ nerfed net metering completely, so off-grid with batteries and controlled grid purchase through ChargeVerters it is. Not a bad idea, I keep getting emails from my monitoring system along the lines of: /* Grid Frequency is 54.7 Hz at...

    New Tariffs in the States

At the end of the day it’s the consumer. While the supplier might cut their margin to balance the old supply/demand curve, they are not going to take a permanent loss.

EG4 18K shutting off on off on every morning 5,30 am

Looks like when the sun comes up and the panels start producing power, but again if the settings don’t match the physical configuration then I’m not surprised “weird stuff happens”

EG4 18K shutting off on off on every morning 5,30 am

That doesn’t say “Trip by AC”, it says “Trip by NO AC”. You seem to have told it you have batteries but then not connected the batteries, so I’m not surprised it’s confused. How is your inverter connected to the grid and the house and the PV?

Used vs new panels for roof mount

If you only have to visit your roof once, that’s a big win. Put up as many panels as you can in one go and bring each string back to the inverters separately in case you need to test or reconfigure without making a roof visit.

How to connect 3 inverters and 3 Heltec/JK BMSes to a PC/Raspberry Pi?

If it’s a port on the inverter that wants to talk to batteries it’s almost certainly going to be the bus master, so your solution would have to eavesdrop on the inverter->BMS communication and hope the data you are looking for is in there. Alternatively you could do a man-in-the-middle...

How to connect 3 inverters and 3 Heltec/JK BMSes to a PC/Raspberry Pi?

Typically RS485 is labelled as A/B or +/-, and RS232 is labelled as Tx/Rx, so you first need to figure out what you have.

4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

I’m going to say no, though the fiction writers and doomsayers don’t find any interest in that. Not that significant grid disruptions wouldn’t put a big dent in so-called “civilization”

4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

I keep hearing this, but every high tension power line I’ve ever seen has individual strands running in parallel next to each other from tower to tower. Twisting the individual aluminum current-carrying strands around the steel strength member won’t cancel the voltage in that one strand.

    New Tariffs in the States

As always, if you ask a question of the Internet, it will respond with yes and no and maybe. First of all the hundred percent tariff is for electric vehicles, as far as we know batteries will not have 100% tariff. Second of all while the announcement is due on Tuesday, we don’t know when the...

Are this Genuine EVE 304AH Batteries?

There seems to be some confusion as to whether we want Grade A EVE cells with traceable provenance, or we want paperwork that says the same thing but at a lower price (or a higher markup for some middleman). The middlemen don’t care, they’ll sell you what looks like what you want. If it’s...
